Trash Fees Expected To Rise By $40 As Solid Waste Budget Passes
Key Points
- $2,093,059 budget approved for trash and recycling
- Estimated $40 increase in residential trash fees
- High recycling contamination (20%) cited as a primary cost driver
Town Meeting approved Article 4, authorizing $2,093,059 for the Solid Waste Enterprise Fund, but the approval came with a warning of an impending fee increase. Town Manager B. Chenard told residents to expect an estimated $40 increase in their annual trash bills for the upcoming year.
Responding to a question from resident M. McNeely, Chenard explained that the town's recycling habits directly impact costs. He noted that if the town can drop its recycling contamination rate below 10%, Pembroke could actually turn a profit on the materials. Currently, the waste in the recycling stream sits at 20%, which continues to drive expenses higher.
Motion: Move that the town appropriate the sum of $2,093,059 from solid waste revenues to fund the fiscal year 2027 solid waste enterprise fund.
