Solid Waste Budget Approved; Residents Face Estimated $40 Trash Fee Increase

Key Points

  • $2,933,059 solid waste budget authorized
  • Estimated $40 increase in annual trash fees for residents
  • Town Manager cites 20% recycling contamination as a major cost driver

Pembroke residents approved Article 4, authorizing a $2,933,059 budget for the Solid Waste Enterprise Fund. While the funding ensures the continuation of trash and recycling services, Town Manager Bill Chenard informed the meeting that residents should expect an estimated $40 increase in their annual trash fees.

Responding to questions from resident Matthew McNeely regarding the rising costs, Chenard explained that high contamination rates in recycling are driving expenses. We are currently over 20% waste in our recycling, Chenard noted, adding that if the town can reduce that figure below 10%, the town could actually begin to see a profit on its recyclables rather than paying for disposal.

Motion: Brian Logan moves to appropriate $2,933,059 from solid waste revenues.
